Sony: LiDar and SPAD Sensors for Machine Vision

Sony is expanding its product range in the field of machine vision and has entered the LiDar domain. Through the development of a range measurement module based on dToF technology, which is a proprietary Sony technology, and by utilizing a SPAD sensor, highly accurate range measurement and distance resolution are made possible.

The component developed by Sony allows, for example, the measurement of 10 meters with a margin of ±5 cm both indoors and outdoors. Moreover, the component can accurately measure the distance to various objects, a feat difficult to achieve with other range measurement methods. This includes objects with low contrast, low reflectivity, and objects floating in the air, making it suitable for integration into robots used in environments such as warehouses and stores where various objects are mixed together.
