The Use of Hyperspectral Cameras in Smart Agriculture

FruitSpec provides a platform for managing fruit harvests for packing houses — from the orchard level to marketing.

FruitSpec uses FX-10 hyperspectral cameras by SPECIM to enable farmers to make better decisions related to crop management using accurate data from the very beginning of the season.
Logistical, marketing, and agronomic decisions can now be based on precise yield estimates early in the season.

FruitSpec counts fruits in the orchard using hyperspectral cameras even while they are still green and appear, to the naked eye, as the same color as the leaves — making it difficult to assess quantities using conventional means.

Thanks to accurate yield estimates, the farmer can plan in advance:

  • the packaging needed at the end of the season,

  • marketing strategies,

  • required harvesting efforts,

  • and concentrate sales efforts more precisely.

FruitSpec uses cameras developed by SPECIM along with deep learning algorithms developed in-house to detect green fruit hidden among dense green foliage — to count them and even estimate their size.

At the beginning of the season, using conventional imaging methods, a fruit-bearing tree would appear like this:

But using hyperspectral imaging and data processing, the same tree appears like this:

FX series hyperspectral cameras, such as the one used by FruitSpec, operate in different wavelength ranges and are used in a wide variety of applications across multiple industries.

The technology can also be used to identify foreign objects — for example, in meat:

With conventional imaging, the image will look like this:

But using a hyperspectral camera, the meat will appear as follows:

Which enables the following diagnostics:

Asio Vision is the official distributor of SPECIM’s hyperspectral cameras in Israel, and also provides feasibility testing, support in sorting algorithm development, proper lighting design, and full implementation — from feasibility study to system integration in production lines, agricultural fields, or aerial platforms.

SPECIM offers a unique product line for mounting hyperspectral cameras on aerial platforms.
